Betta Diseases

Ick
Ick is a disease that affects many types of fish, including betta. This betta disease is easily identifiable by the white specks that will appear on your betta. Ick is a parasite that causes cysts on your betta’s body. Having aquarium salt in your tank or bowl can help to prevent ick, but if it is contracted will need to be treated with medicine.


Popeye
Popeye is another common betta fish disease. This problem is caused by an infection, and must be treated with an antibiotic. To prevent popeye, ensure that you keep the water clean in your betta bowl or tank.

Betta Tanks

Betta can live in a variety of tanks.  If you look at the pet store, you will often see that betta kept in a small, plastic cup.  While betta are very hearty and can survive these conditions, it is best if the betta can be kept in a larger aquarium.  THe betta can survive in almost any size bowl or aquarium, but, contrary to popular belief, they do not prefer small areas. Ideally a betta will be kept in a 10 gallon aquarium or larger, but they will be ok in large bowls also .Remember, in aquariums or betta bowls, male betta should never be kept together, because one will often kill the other.

Betta Fish

Betta, also known as siamese fighting fish, are one of the most beautiful and popular fish kept by aquarists all over the world.  Betta are most known for their long, flowing tails and for their beautiful colors.

Betta are also know for being extremely territorial.  In fact, if two male bettas are kept in the same aquarium, one may kill the other.  In their natural habitat, male bettas usually do not kill each other because the weaker male can run away.

Betta fish are categorized in different ways.  First, they are categorized by species.  They are also classified by the types of tail that they have.  These types include veiltail, half-moon,  combtail, delta-tail, short-finned, double-tail, crowntail, and fantail)

Betta Food

Betta eat a variety of foods, and can survive on almost anything.  Naturally though, they are carnivorous and prefer live or frozen foods, including bloodworms and brine shrimp.  Betta can survive on flake food, but this is not healthy for them and they may lose some of their color.

Many companies also produce food pre-formulated for bettas. These foods can be very good for your betta. Remember, your betta will do best when varying foods to give him a steady supply of nutrients.

Betta Species

When most people hear about betta, they think of Betta Splendins, also known as the siamese fighting fish, but, in fact, there are several other species of betta fish.  Here are a few of the most popular breeds of betta besides Betta Splendins


Betta Smaragdina

This type of betta is also known as the Emerald green betta. This popular type of betta is known for its hardiness, as it can thrive in varying water conditions.


Betta Mahachai

This betta breed has only been discovered recently.  Its natural habitat is off of Thailand.


Betta Coccina

Betta coccina is a redish-colored betta.  It is also found in Asia and is a nice addition to any aquarium.


Betta Albimarginata

This species of betta was discovered only around 15 years ago in 1993.  It is a reddish-colored betta with a white stripe at the bottom of its fin.
